Refreshing Summer Smoothie

Sugar Bombs and What They REALLY Do To Your Body

I hear from most of you that sugar is a problem, like, a HUGE problem.  For you, your kids, your husband, your friends….

Here’s what it does to you, in a nutshell…

You eat or drink something sugary like a muffin, sugar-laden coffee or tea, even a smoothie (that’s mostly made of fruit), cereal, granola, yogurt.  Then you’re hungry like an hour or two later?  What?

Your blood sugar spikes, then crashes.  You start to feel hungry again.  You grab another sugary food because your body craves another energy boost.

Did you know that insulin shuts down fat-burning for 6-8 hours?  So, eating a sugary snack which raises insulin, is keeping you fat.  Sorry to be so harsh.

When you choose foods/meals that have protein, fat, fiber, and non-starchy veggies you elongate that blood sugar curve and you can go several more hours without needing a snack or another meal.

So, in order to feel full and keep your blood sugar steady and stable it’s super important to have a meal with protein, fiber, and fat and non-starchy veggies.  And personally, I try to include greens and chance I have.

I’ve been enjoying this smoothie lately, it’s so refreshing and since summer is upon us, it tastes delicious.  Best of all, it is very satiating- I’m happy for hours!  It keeps my hunger at bay because it has everything I mentioned earlier… protein, fat, fiber and veggies.  Try it!

 Refreshing Summer Smoothie

  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1 T chia seeds
  • 1/2 lime or lemon, peeled
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled, or 1 Persian cucumber*
  • 1/4 cup peppermint leaves, packed
  • 1 serving vanilla protein powder*

MIX all of the above ingredients, in a blender, until smooth.  Makes 1 serving.  ENJOY!!

*Persian cucumbers are small and you can eat the skin… I’ve found them at Trader Joe’s

*Protein powders are probably one of my biggest pet peeves because they are loaded with crap… just like any other food product, please read the labels.  I prefer paleo-inspired protein powders because the ingredients are so pure.  Try this one! (LINK)
